LOUISVILLE, KY- The Allen University men's track and field team opened their 2023 season with the HBCU Classic hosted by Kentucky State University in Louisville on Monday.
The team came away with some good results in the sprints and field events en route to placing 5th out of 7 teams in the classic with 30 points ahead of Philander Smith (Ark.) and Lemoyne-Owen (TN). Div. I Tennessee State won the meet followed by Bluefield St., Lane, and KSU.
Freshman Sprinter
Zalyn Myers led the Jackets with his second place tie finish in the 60 meter finals in a time of 7.08 seconds while teammates
Montrell White and sophomore
Josh Burley finished right behind him in 4th and 5th respectively. White had a time of 7.1 seconds and Burley a time of 7.17. All three improved on their times from the prelims as well.
Myers again led the Jackets in the 200 meters finishing 6th overall out of 30 sprinters in a time of 23 seconds while Burley was 19th in 24.3 and seniorÂ
Daquan Brock finishing in 22nd in 24.7 seconds. FreshmanÂ
Jabari Moss then placed 16th in the 400 meters in a time of 56.6 seconds.Â
Brock also rallied for a terrific finish in the 600 meters coming in 2nd place overall in 1 minute and 35 seconds.
In the field events, Myers again led the team in the Long Jump finishing 11th out of 18 with a mark of 5.97 meters (19 feet) while teammate, juniorÂ
Montrell White came in 13th at 5.7 meters.
In the Shot Put, freshman Jyrique Mangum had a quality showing placing 6th overall out of 22 with a mark of 12.2 meters (40 feet) while teammates
Isaiah Milhouse and
Sheldon Brown immediately followed Mangum placing 7th and 9th respectively. The senior Milhouse had a throw of 12.03 meters while Brown's was 12.02. Sophomore
Preston Conner was also 11th in the shot put with a mark of 10.67 meters.
Junior
Sheldon Brown then rallied back with a great showing in the Weight Throw placing 2nd overall out of 19 with a mark of 14.8 meters (48 feet) while Milhouse followed him in 8th place at 10.45 meters. Mangum also finished 10th overall at 9.7 meter while Conner was 12th in 8.04 meters.
The men are next competing at USC in the Carolina Challenge on Friday and Saturday in Columbia at 10 aM.
