Allen University cares deeply about the student-athletes and focuses great effort and attention on their health and wellness. In an effort to mitigate the risks inherent to participation in collegiate sports, Allen University has professional athletic trainers to address the medical needs of our student athletes for all sports. All our athletic trainers (ATs) are nationally certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification Inc. (BOC) and state certified by South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).
Regardless of what sport athletes participate in, Athletic Trainers (ATs) provide:
- Injury preventions advise/instruction
- Examinations
- Diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of emergent, acute or chronic injuries and medical conditions, to minimize subsequent impairments and functional limitations.
By partnering with U of SC's Arnold School of Public Health advanced athletic training program we are supplemented with BOC certified graduate assistants. Our current staff consists of one AT.
Team Physician – Dr. Jeffrey Guy, is a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in Sports medicine for PRISMA Health. Additionally, we have access to numerous other orthopedic surgeons and specialists at PRISMA Health.
AT Services – We provide emergency care for urgent orthopedic and traumatic injuries such as fractures, dislocations, joint sprains, muscle strains, and wounds such as lacerations, blisters and abrasions. Our follow-on care utilizes a number of different preventive & rehabilitation therapies and techniques to service our athletes including but not limited to:
Therapeutic exercise, stretching, moist heat packs, ultrasound, electric stimulation, various cryotherapies – ice massage, game ready, padding, bracing and taping.
Costs/Insurance - Athletic training services are provided by the university free of charge. However, as is standard within athletics industry, should an athlete be referred to an outside provider, medical costs will be billed to the athlete's personal insurance. Secondary insurance is provided by the university to offset any outstanding costs after the coverage allowed by the athlete's insurance. All medical claims must be filed by the athletic training staff prior to being seen. Athletes must be seen and referred by the athletic training staff in order for a claim to be filed. The University can NOT be responsible for medical care that has not been approved by the athletic training staff. All athletes are required to have personal health insurance to be in compliance with Federal law under the Affordable Care Act.
Forms (Allen University Returning Student-Athlete Pre-Participation Forms & Allen University New Student-Athlete Pre-Particpation Forms) - We require all athletes to complete a packet that includes annual physical, health insurance information, and other forms that enable the staff to provide the optimum care. These forms are required to be completed annually and can be found on the website. The annual physical must be completed and signed only by an MD or DO prior to coming onto campus. It is done at the expense of the athlete, the school will not cover the cost of physicals. If they do not have a physical, if it is not signed by the correct personnel, or they are marked not cleared on the physical by the MD or DO, they cannot participate in any athletic activities (weights, practice, and games). The rest of the required paperwork is on Healthy Roster and new incoming athletes will need to see the athletic trainer(s) upon arrival to campus to create an account to fill out the remaining paperwork.
Healthy Roster – HR is a software platform/Electronic Medical Record (EMR) that we utilize to document an athlete's health status. All athletes are required to use HR.
