Lady Yellow Jackets Show Heart in Five-Set Home Opener Loss to Erskine

Game Recap: Volleyball | 9/12/2025 | By Phil Jackson, Allen University Sports Information Director

Columbia, SC — On a night filled with anticipation, pride, and community celebration for Military & First Responder Appreciation, the Allen University Lady Yellow Jackets gave the home crowd every reason to stand on their feet — even in defeat.

In front of an energized crowd at John Hurst Adams Gymnasium, Allen dropped its home opener in a five-set thriller to Erskine College (12–25, 25–21, 25–21, 15–25, 12–15). It marked the second straight match for the Yellow Jackets that came down to the wire, and while the result wasn't in their favor, the effort, grit, and togetherness on display sent a powerful message: this is a team with fight.

After a sluggish opening set loss, Head Coach Dannielle Robinson gathered her team and delivered a passionate challenge — and her players answered. The Lady Jackets stormed back to take the next two sets with identical 25–21 scores, swinging the momentum with hustle plays, key digs, and electric rallies that lit up the crowd.

Though Erskine would respond in the fourth set and ultimately close out the match in a tightly contested fifth, the Yellow Jackets showed the type of heart and depth that's beginning to define their season.

Standout Performers:

  • Maliyah Spencer led the team with 9 kills, providing consistent offensive firepower.
  • Tamia Horton orchestrated the attack with 18 assists while adding 2 service aces.
  • JaNiya Lamar anchored the backline with 18 digs and showed elite anticipation throughout the night.
  • Saige Bradley and Janaye Sweat made their presence known at the net, each recording 3 blocks.
  • Amaya Bernardo and Janaye Sweat contributed 6 kills apiece in a balanced offensive effort.

Looking Ahead:

Now sitting at 1–2 overall, Allen's early season is already shaping into one full of resilience. Despite back-to-back five-set matches, the team continues to prove they're not just here to compete — they're building something. Coach Robinson's passion is echoed in the effort of her players, and with conference play approaching, the lessons learned in these tight matches may prove to be invaluable.

The Lady Yellow Jackets return to action this Saturday, September 14 at 1:00 PM in a highly anticipated rematch against Claflin University — a team Allen defeated 3–1 earlier this month on the road. This time, they'll be on their home court, looking to finish what they start and protect their turf.
