Box Score SAVANNAH, GA - The Allen University volleyball team rallied from a set down to roll past Savannah State University in four sets on the road Wednesday evening.
SSU held off the Yellow Jackets in the first set 25-18 on 17 kills before Allen came back to rock the Tigers 25-14 in the second frame hitting .275 with 14 kills and holding the Tigers to just nine kills. The third set then happened to be the most competitive of the match as SSU got out to an 8-3 lead before extending it to 16-12. However, Allen then went on a 10-1 run to take a 22-17 lead on kills from hitterÂ
Maliyah Spencer and setter
Kayla Chambliss to go on and win the set by six points, 25-19 on 14 kills while hitting .182. Finally, AU broke Savannah's spirit in the fourth set as they absolutely cruised to an easy 25-12 win hitting .300 with 11 kills and only 2 errors.
Spencer led the charge for the Yellow Jackets totaling 10 kills and 9 digs while hitting .150 along with junior middle blocker
Taylor Lawrence who also had 10 kills and hit a team-best .533 with four blocks. Freshman hitter
Tahmiah Lawson had a stellar game also grabbing 8 kills with just one error and hitting .304 with 3 blocks and 3 digs.
Middle hitters
Marlaysia Westbrook and
Sydney Ross also played well combining for 13 kills and only 5 errors hitting .225 with 6 blocks and 8 digs as a duo. Individually, Westbrook had 4 blocks and Ross had 6 digs. Freshman libero
Myra Lopez also had another good game leading the Jackets with 29 digs while fellow DS,
Jayla Neely had 8 digs and 2 aces.Â
Chambliss again tallied a double-double of 22 assists and 11 digs with 5 kills, 2 aces, and 3 blocks while fellow setter,
Lillian Williams also had 14 assists and 7 digs.
The victory was Allen's 14th on the season breaking last year's win total by one as AU improves to 14-13 overall and 6-11 i n the SIAC while Savannah St falls to 8-11 in the conference and 12-12 overall. SSU's conference season has concluded so if Allen wins their final two SIAC matches this weekend against Benedict and Clark Atlanta, then Allen will finish in 5th place in the SIAC East Division.
Allen will now host rival Benedict on Friday evening at 6:30 pm on Senior Night before hosting Clark-Atlanta in their season finale on Saturday at 12 Noon.
