Allen Silences Rival Crowd with 69-60 Statement Win Over Benedict

Yellow Jackets even season series and show dangerous potential in SIAC play.

MBB Game Recap: 2/15/2026 | By Phil Jackson, Allen University Director of Sports Information and Communications

COLUMBIA, S.C. — In a rivalry matchup packed with intensity, grit, and postseason implications, Allen University men's basketball delivered one of its most complete performances of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating across-the-street rival Benedict College 69–60 inside HRC Arena.

The victory not only avenged last month's loss to Benedict, but also evened the season series 1–1 and strengthened Allen's standing within the SIAC Eastern Division race.

Game Flow — Physical, Tight, and Championship-Style

The contest featured eight lead changes and three ties, reflecting the back-and-forth nature of a rivalry game where every possession mattered.

Allen led 31–26 at halftime, controlling tempo and limiting Benedict to just 38.5% shooting in the first period. The Yellow Jackets then showed composure down the stretch, outscoring the Tigers 38–34 in the second half to secure the nine-point win.

Despite Benedict crashing the boards for 17 second-chance points, Allen countered with discipline and execution, winning the turnover battle and capitalizing for 24 points off turnovers while dominating the paint with 34 interior points.

Standout Performers — Yellow Jackets Step Up

With key players healthy after missing the previous meeting, Allen showcased the depth and balance that Head Coach Douglas Whittler has been building all season.

Julian McGowan — Game Leader

  • 22 points
  • 9-for-10 FG
  • 4 rebounds
McGowan delivered an ultra-efficient scoring performance, shooting 90% from the field and providing a consistent offensive anchor.

Shadale Knight — Clutch Presence

  • 13 points
  • Perfect 10-for-10 FT
  • Defensive activity and late-game poise
Knight's flawless free-throw shooting sealed the game and highlighted Allen's dominance at the line (team: 22-24, 91.7%).

Christopher McKnight — All-Around Impact

  • 11 points
  • 6 rebounds
He controlled the glass and helped stabilize the offense during key stretches.

Ashton Henderson — Two-Way Spark

  • 9 points
  • 4-for-4 FT
Provided timely scoring and physical defense when momentum shifted.

Bench Production

Allen's depth proved decisive with 37 bench points, nearly doubling Benedict's reserves and giving the Yellow Jackets fresh legs in crunch time.

By the Numbers — Why Allen Won

  • Field Goal %: Allen 48.9% | Benedict 40.0%
  • Free Throws: Allen 91.7% | Benedict 55.6%
  • Points Off Turnovers: Allen +12 advantage
  • Bench Points: Allen +16 advantage

Simply put — Allen executed better, protected possessions, and closed stronger.

Statement Win for a Dangerous Team

This wasn't just a rivalry victory. It was proof of what Allen can be when healthy and locked in.

With injured players back in the rotation and chemistry improving, Saturday's performance showed a team capable of competing with anyone in the conference. The Yellow Jackets displayed toughness, depth, and late-game execution — the exact traits needed for a postseason push.

Message sent: when this roster is whole and playing together, Allen is a problem in the SIAC. The Yellow Jackets are back in action for Senior Night Monday, February 16, 2026 with a tip-off of 7:30PM.
