JACKSONVILLE, F.L. --- The Allen University women's basketball team was defeated at Edward Waters Saturday evening, 57-45.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to the offensive start they were hoping for, as Allen opened the game on a 5-0 run with a basket from
Morgan Smith and free throws from
Eboni Clay and Kasey Smith. However, Edward Waters pieced together a run of their own to take the lead, 6-5, with 5:58 remaining in the first quarter. The game remained close until the final 2:40 when EWU closed out the period on a 7-0 run to take a 18-11 lead into the second quarter. It was in the second quarter that both teams leaned on their defensive efforts as Allen was held to just one made basket, and the Yellow Jackets held EWU to only four. At the half, Edward Waters led 28-17. During the third and fourth quarters, the two SIAC foes exchanged buckets as Allen scored 28 points in the second half to Edward Waters' 29 points.
Allen's leading scorer was
Taliah Wesley with 17 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 performance at the free-throw line. Smith grabbed a team-best nine rebounds in Saturday's effort.
The Yellow Jackets' next game will be Monday, February 10 at Savannah State. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside Tiger Arena.
