Game Recap: Softball |

Three Home Runs Not Enough for Yellow Jackets Against Claflin

COLUMBIA, S.C. --- The Allen University softball team began their 2025 season under first year head coach Kandi Krebs Friday with a non-conference doubleheader against Claflin. Despite hitting a combined three home runs in the two games, the Yellow Jackets fell to the Panthers 11-5 in game one and 12-8 in game two.

GAME ONE:
After surrendering a run in the top of the first inning, Allen bounced back in the bottom half as Elissa Rich hammered her first home run of the season to centerfield to tie the game, 1-1. Later in the fourth, trailing 4-1, Rich came home once again to cut into the deficit as the sophomore scored on a wild pitch. Fast forward to the sixth inning, and it was none other than Rich who helped add Allen runs to the scoreboard with her second home run of the game, a two-run blast over the fence. The Yellow Jackets did not go away quietly in the seventh either as Kasiyah Byrd hit an RBI single back up the middle to score Sarah Henry and record her second hit of the game.

From the circle, Rich struck out six batters across the full seven innings of action, and at-the-plate, she went 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs and a double, in addition to her two home runs.

GAME TWO:
Claflin found offensive success early on in the second game of Friday's doubleheader as the Panthers scored five runs in the top of the first inning. However, Allen responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first as Destiny Breton drew a bases-loaded walk and Brionna King singled to centerfield to score Rich. Then in the third inning, preseason All-SIAC selection Alaina Harvey bashed a grand slam for her first home run of the season and the sixth of her career. After three frames, Claflin led 9-6. Once again in the seventh inning the Yellow Jackets fought against adversity as Harvey connected on an RBI single to bring in Tylar Crawford, and Byrd lifted an RBI hit to left centerfield that scored Jeramyah Adams in the two-run inning.

UP NEXT:
Allen will travel to Bluffton, South Carolina for the USCB Invitational hosted on the campus of the University of South Carolina Beaufort from February 14-15, 2025. The Yellow Jackets will play a pair of opponents each day, beginning with Shorter University on Friday, February 14 at 11:00 a.m.
