COLUMBIA, S.C. --- With the two SIAC foes separated by just four points with less than seven minutes remaining Tuesday night, the Allen University women's basketball team closed out their 13th victory of the season on a 19-7 run to defeat Savannah State, 75-59.
Although SSU opened the game on a 5-0 run, the Yellow Jackets responded with a pair of free throws and a jumper from Kasey Smith to bring themselves back within one point of the lead with 5:33 left in the first quarter. Following a Tigers' three-pointer with 3:28 to go, Allen closed out the first on a 9-2 run as
Eboni Clay,
Morgan Smith, and
Talayah Boxley each made shots to give Allen a 13-9 lead after one quarter of play. In the second, Allen continued to sink shots and create turnovers defensively and took a 31-19 advantage into the halftime break. Through the first two quarters, Boxley led all scorers with 11 points, followed by Clay and Kasey Smith.
The third quarter saw Savannah State close in on Allen's lead and trim the Yellow Jacket's advantage to eight points, 50-42, entering the fourth. Following offensive mistakes to start the fourth, Allen saw their lead cut down to four points with 6:42 to play. However, when the Yellow Jackets needed it most,
Taliah Wesley delivered in an impactful way. The senior guard knocked down a three-point shot to extend the Allen lead to seven points, then Wesley connected on a layup while being fouled on the ensuing possession. Ahead by 10 points, 62-52, after Wesley's made free-throw, Allen closed out the remaining 5:43 to secure their victory.
Wesley finished the night as Allen's top scorer with 20 points, and recorded her sixth double-double of the season with a team-best 11 rebounds. Joining Wesley in double-figures was Boxley with 15 points, Clay with 14 points, and Kasey Smith with 12 points. Smith finished one rebound shy of a double-double with nine.
Allen's next game will be a road trip to visit AME rival Edward Waters on Saturday, February 8. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. inside Adams-Jenkins Community Sports & Music Complex.
