COLUMBIA, S.C. --- Despite a late three-point shot to force overtime, the Allen University men's basketball team fell to Central State Saturday, 61-55.
After a low-scoring first half saw the Yellow Jackets take a 23-15 lead into the locker rooms for halftime, both teams' offenses saw increased production in the second half. Allen initially built their halftime lead up to 12 points, 33-21, with 16:11 left to play, however CSU began to cut away at the deficit and tied the game, 37-37, with 8:40 to go. The Yellow Jackets were never able to regain their lead, but with 39 seconds remaining in regulation, freshman
Hunter Johnson stole the inbounds pass from the Marauders and sank a three-pointer from the right wing to tie the game, 50-50. Allen forced two CSU misses over the remaining moments to end regulation. In overtime, neither team led by more than three points until 13 seconds remaining as Central State extended their lead to secure the win.
The Yellow Jackets' leading scorer was
Peyton Weathersby with 11 points, followed by
Noel Scott with nine and
Jordan Edmond with eight points to pair with six rebounds.
Allen will have one week off from competition before traveling to Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday, January 11 at 4:00 p.m. to take on Clark Atlanta.
