COLUMBIA, S.C. --- In a non-conference matchup Thursday night, the Allen University men's basketball team utilized a late first half surge to push past Clinton College, 78-58.
With 13:38 left to play in the first half, the Golden Bears and Yellow Jackets were tied at 15-15. However, Allen outscored Clinton 35-13 over the remaining minutes to take a commanding 49-28 advantage into the locker rooms for halftime.
Jordan Edmond and
Mike Best co-led the Yellow Jackets at the break with eight points each. Throughout the second half, Allen held strong to their double-digit lead, and incorporated their full roster into the action as every Yellow Jacket who dressed for the game recorded at least one point or one rebound.
Best closed the night as Allen's top scorer with a season-high 12 points in 11 minutes. Joining Best in double-figures was
Marc Raye Jr. with 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists, and also
Peyton Weathersby who finished one rebound shy of a double-double at 10 points and nine rebounds. Weathersby was also critical on the defensive end as the junior guard matched his career-high with five steals in the victory. As a team, Allen shot 55.6% from the floor, including sinking 11 three-pointers as they shot 50% beyond the arc.
Allen faces a short turnaround as they return to the hardwood of John Hurst Adams Gymnasium tomorrow, Friday, January 17 to host SIAC foe Albany State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
