COLUMBIA, S.C. --- Behind the fourth double-double of the season from
Taliah Wesley, the Allen University women's basketball team outlasted Albany State in a back-and-forth battle Saturday afternoon, 76-64.
Wesley's strong performance started right away in the SIAC clash as the senior guard hit a pair of free throws to tie the game early on, 2-2. From there, the Yellow Jackets and Golden Rams exchanged short leads until Allen took an 11-10 advantage with 4:48 left in the first quarter. To close out the first, the Yellow Jackets went on a 13-5 run to hold a 23-15 lead entering the second quarter. Allen held strong to their eight-point lead in the second quarter, and went into the half ahead 38-30. Out of the break, Albany State proved to be a formidable foe and battled back to take the lead, 57-56, with 6:32 remaining in the game. However, the Yellow Jackets fought back to tie the game at 60-60, then went on an 8-0 run over the next four minutes to jump ahead, 68-60, with 1:15 to play. Allen closed out the final 75 seconds to secure their 10th win of the season, becoming one of four SIAC teams to reach double-digit victories this season.
Leading the way for Allen, once again, was Wesley with a team-best 25 points, on 8-for-14 shooting, and 11 rebounds.
Eboni Clay also added in double-figures with 11 rebounds, marking her ninth double-digit scoring performance of her freshman campaign. Both Wesley and Clay were also critical on the defensive end as each totaled five steals in the victory. Additionally, sophomore forward
Peighton Jambor tallied eight points, nine rebounds and a season-high five blocks.
The Yellow Jackets remain at home for a Monday matchup against Fort Valley State. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on January 20 inside John Hurst Adams Gymnasium.
