SAVANNAH, G.A. --- Although
Zion Duncan set a new career-high with 16 points, Allen women's basketball's rally came up just short on the road Monday, falling to Savannah State, 62-56.
After taking an early 4-0 lead, Allen saw Savannah State storm back and take a 15-6 advantage with 3:53 left in the first quarter. Then it would be the Yellow Jackets turn to battle their way back into it as Allen closed out the first quarter on a 10-5 run to trail by just four points. A competitive second quarter sat in a tied game until there was only 14 seconds left in the first half and the Tigers sank a layup to enter halftime ahead, 31-29. The third quarter is where Savannah State built their largest lead of the game, up 45-33 with two minutes to go in the quarter. Allen once again displayed their toughness, outscoring the Tigers 20-17 throughout the fourth quarter, yet it would not be enough to complete the comeback.
The Yellow Jackets were led by Duncan's performance as the freshman center made seven of her eight shot attempts. Joining Duncan in double-figures included
Victoria Zidor with 12 points and
Taliah Wesley with 10 points. A major presence on the boards Monday was the play of
Talayah Boxley who grabbed 11 rebounds total, including nine on the offensive glass.
Allen returns home to host Converse Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m. in John Hurst Adams Gymnasium. The game will be a pink-out theme in support of National Women and Girls in Sports Day. Tickets are available at www.auyellowjackets.com.
