FORT VALLEY, G.A. --- Leading for all except three minutes, Allen women's basketball controlled the game nearly from start to finish Monday night, winning at Fort Valley State, 66-58.
After facing an early 5-0 deficit, Allen responded quickly by closing the first quarter on an 18-5 run. The momentum from Allen's rally carried over into the second quarter, as the Yellow Jackets held Fort Valley State to just a single made basket in 14 shot attempts over the 10 minute period, to take a 37-16 lead into the break. In the second half, FVSU would score 42 points over the final two quarters, yet it would not be enough, as the Yellow Jackets secured their third-consecutive win. A deciding factor in Monday's win was Allen's ability to control the boards - out-rebounding FVSU 49-38, including 15 offensive rebounds that resulted in 17 second-chance points.
For the first time in her career,
Tati Morris finished in double-figures, with a career-best 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting in 25 minutes of action.
Kash Hankerson co-led the team, along with Morris, with 12 points to pair with six assists. Meanwhile,
Talayah Boxley posted her first double-double of the season, and second of her career, with 11 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. In Allen's active three-game win streak, the Yellow Jackets have used a team effort in each contest, as every player who has played has scored.
The Yellow Jackets will return home Saturday, Feb. 17 at 2:00 p.m. for the "Battle of Taylor Street", as Allen hosts rival Benedict. Tickets will be sold at the door on a first-come, first-serve basis for $15. Allen students will be admitted for free, if they present a valid student ID card.
