Yellow Jackets Defeat Benedict in Overtime for Season Sweep

COLUMBIA, S.C. ---  Allen women's basketball prevailed in overtime to defeat Benedict Saturday, 71-64, to seal a season sweep of the Tigers and win their fourth consecutive game.

A close-contest that saw six ties, three lead changes, and neither team lead by double-digits, the two Taylor Street rivals battled throughout the first half to go into the break tied at 30. In the third quarter, three shots from Mya Johnson and a three-pointer from Kash Hankerson gave Allen a 42-41 advantage heading into the fourth. Fast forward to the final two minutes of regulation as Benedict held a 61-59 lead until 21 seconds remained and Talayah Boxley connected on a jumper in the paint to tie the game and force overtime. In the extra five minute period, Allen held Benedict to only three points total - a stretch that included a nearly four minute scoring drought for the Tigers. Meanwhile, Allen saw Johnson, Hankerson, and Zion Duncan all sink shots to lead the Yellow Jackets to their second victory of the season over Benedict.

Johnson led the way for Allen with 16 points. Hankerson and Boxley joined her double-figures with 14 points and 13 points, respectivley, along with eight rebounds each.

The Yellow Jackets look to push their win streak to five games on the road Tuesday at Miles College, with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
