PEMBROKE, N.C. --- In their first competition of the 2024-2025 season, Allen University's men's wrestling team brought 11 Yellow Jackets to the PJ Smith Pembroke Open on the campus of UNC Pembroke. Four different competitors placed for Allen, and eight wrestlers won at-least one match in the open tournament. 

Christian Poplous was Allen's top placer Sunday as the senior finished third in the 197 weight class. Poplous secured a major decision over Florida's Ethan Larsen, an 11-6 decision against UNC Pembroke's Malcom Gray, and a 12-9 decision versus UNC Pembroke's Trystan Richardson before he finished the day defeated Gray again, 10-3, in the third place match. 

Xavier Anderson posted a strong collegiate debut for the Yellow Jackets as the Summerville, South Carolina native finished in fourth at 125. Anderson's trio of wins included one by major decision and two by fall in one minute and the second in just 24 seconds. 

Drevon Wallace worked his way through the bracket in the 149 weight class with three fall victories against three adversaries, including one tech fall. Wallace finished the afternoon by winning the fifth place match with a fall in a mere 14 seconds. 

Jerrel Baskins was the fourth Yellow Jacket to place Sunday as the Decatur, Georgia native placed sixth in the 184 weight class. Baskins won his first match of the morning against a competitor from UNC Pembroke in a 9-5 decision, and emerged victorious in his second match with a fall in 59 seconds against Coker's Joshua Howell. 

Other Yellow Jackets who won a match at the open included Quincy Gash with two victories, Farrad Moore with a fall win in 2:08, and both Rubin Izzard and Mekhi McDowell in the 285 weight class. 

Allen returns home to prepare for their first dual meet of the season later this week. The Yellow Jackets host No. 1 Lander University Wednesday, November 6 at 6:00 p.m. inside John Hurst Adams Gymnasium.
