COLUMBIA, S.C. --- Despite a valiant defensive effort Wednesday night, the Allen University men's basketball team fell to Livingstone College, 51-50.
The Yellow Jackets forced the Blue Bears to commit 20 turnovers and held LC to shoot just 21% from three-point range, but much like Allen, Livingstone also proved to be a difficult defense to break. Allen shot 14-of-49 from the floor (28.6%) and a season-low 57.1% from the free-throw line.
At the half, Allen trailed by three points, 24-21. However, in the second half the Yellow Jackets overcame their halftime deficit and took the lead, 37-35, with 10:48 to play. With neither team leading by more than four points across the final 10 minutes of the game, Wednesday's non-conference contest ultimately came down to the final moments. With 10 seconds to play, Livingstone tied the game, 49-49, with a pair of free-throws. On the ensuing play, an Allen turnover led to a foul that sent the Blue Bears back to the line with four seconds left. Livingstone made both shots to take a 51-49 advantage and left Allen down to their final possession. With time left for just one shot,
Marc Raye Jr. attempted a three-point shot and was fouled with 0.3 seconds on the clock. Trailing by two points, Raye made his first free-throw but would go on the miss the final two to end the game.
Raye co-led the Yellow Jackets in scoring, along with
Jordan Edmond, with 10 points. Junior guard
Peyton Weathersby added nine points, and senior point guard
Jeremiah Francis finished with eight points to pair with four rebounds.
Allen returns to action on Tuesday, November 26 against Virginia University of Lynchburg. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. inside John Hurst Adams Gymnasium.
