COLUMBIA, SC --- In their lowest scoring affair of the season, Allen men's basketball managed to overcome a halftime deficit and saw
Jordan Edmond score with five seconds remaining to defeat Savannah State Monday, 49-47.
Monday marked the first meeting this season between the Yellow Jackets and the Tigers, and it was one that registered 43 total fouls, six lead changes, seven ties, and neither team leading by a margin larger than four points. After trailing 27-26 at half, Allen responded well defensively in the second half as they held Savannah State to shoot (0-8) from three-point range. Of the 47 points Allen surrendered to the Tigers, 22 of them came at the free-throw line.
With 30 seconds remaining, and the game tied at 47, SSU missed a shot and grabbed an offensive rebound. However, on the ensuing pass, Edmond recorded his third steal of the game. The next possession saw the Yellow Jackets take time off the clock and
Talton Jones finding Edmond in the paint for a layup to give Allen a 49-47 lead with seven seconds left. The Tigers had one final look from mid-court, but were unable to connect at the buzzer.
"A great bounce-back win for our team tonight," said head coach Shawn Walker. "Our guys battled through some adversity tonight and kept their composure in the end to help us in this tough conference win."
For the second time in his last four games, Jones scored in double-figures as he finished as Allen's leading scorer Monday night with 14 points.
Malik Lacewell played a team-high 31 minutes and totaled seven points in the victory.
With Monday's win, Allen is now 10-9 overall, 6-6 SIAC. This marks the first time in Allen's NCAA era (since 2021) that the Yellow Jackets have reached 10 wins in a season. Additionally, Walker in his first season has already matched the combined win total Allen had from the two previous seasons.
