Volleyball's Rally Falls Short at Fort Valley

FORT Valley, Ga. - The Allen University volleyball fell 3-1 in their opening match of the season on the road at SIAC foe Fort Valley State on Sunday afternoon.

FVSU pulled away late to win the first set 25-18 on 12 kills. The Wildcats then took the second set as well 25-20 in an evenly played set.  Allen roared back in the third to win 25-20 dominating the set with 13 kills and hitting .250 on the attack. Unfortunately, Allen fell just two points short in the fourth set as their valiant comeback bid saw them with more kills in the set than FVSU, but saw the Wildcats clinch the match with a couple less attack errors. FVSU held a 20-15 lead in the fourth before Allen went on an 8-4 run to climb to within one point at 24-23. However, a kill by the Wildcats ended the match 25-23.

FVSU totaled 43 kills for the match just one more than the Jackets while aU hit .147 as a team.

Allen was led by sophomore outside hitter Maliyah Spencer who had 15 kills and hit .167 while freshman outside hitter Tamiyah Lawson also finished with double-digit kills recording 10 and hitting .217. Freshman DS Myra Lopez also played well defensively collecting a team-high 20 digs and 2 assists. 

Sophomore setter Lillian Williams also had a solid night notching 30 assists along with 3 kills, a team-best four aces and put up six digs. Sophomore Right side hitter Cadence Leaks and junior middle Taylor Lawrence also combined for 10 kills registering five apiece while Lawrence hit .556. Senior middle Marlaysia Westbrook also registered three solo blocks with three kills and an ace.


UP NEXT
Allen will next return to action on the road Tuesday evening in Sumter to take on Morris College in an exhibition match at 7PM. The Yellow Jackets will then return home the following night, Wednesday, to host Livingstone in their home opener.
