NEWBERRY, SC - The Allen University women's soccer team used three first-half goals while posting a great effort on Saturday as they almost upset Newberry College before falling 5-3.
Allen got off to a great start leading 2-0 after the opening 13 minutes. Senior forward
Acacia Small got AU on the board first with her goal in the 7th minute of action. Small's goal was her third of the season. Junior defender
Rachel Rolle then followed with her second goal of the season in the 13th minute to put Allen up 2-0 for the first time in school history.
Four minutes later, Newberry would get to within one goal scoring in the 17th minute before the Wolves tied it up in the 24th minute at two apiece. Allen would not relent, however, and scored their third goal of the game just 90 seconds later in the 25th minute as junior midfielder Toni Sledz knocked in her first goal of the season off an assist from freshman midfielder
Alexia Velasquez to put the Lady Jackets back up 3-2 going into halftime.
Newberry, however, would tie the game again early in the second half with their third goal in the 49th minute. NC then took the lead in the 78th minute going up 4-3. The Lady Wolves then added a fifth goal for insurance on a penalty kick in the 86th minute to hang on for the win.
Freshman Goalkeeper
Rianda Pimienta-Solano made 8 saves for the Yellow Jackets on 13 shots on goal while Allen scored 3 goals on 4 shots on goal. Allen falls to 0-3 on the year while Newberry improves to 2-2.
The Yellow Jackets will finish out their road trip when they head to Macon, GA on Wednesday at 6 PM to face Div. III foe Wesleyan College.
