ALBANY, Ga. - The Allen University volleyball team fell 3-1 in their second SIAC match of the season on the road at Albany State on Sunday afternoon.
ASU pulled away late to win the first set 25-16 on 11 kills with Allen managing seven. The Lady Rams then squeaked out the second set 25-23 as AU held a 3-point lead late at 22-19, but could not finish the set as attack errors were their undoing.
Allen would rally back in the third set as they led almost for the entirety to edge the Rams 25-23 on 12 kills and hitting .281 on the attack. Albany then got out to a strong start in the fourth set leading 14-6 after the first 20 points forcing a Yellow Jacket timeout. ASU would then extend their lead to 19-12 before Allen began a comeback. The AU ladies would go on to score 5 straight points and climb to within 19-17 to force an ASU timeout. Allen used kills from senior middle hitters
Marlaysia Westbrook and junior
Sydney Ross and two aces from freshman libero
Myra Lopez in the rally. However, the Lady Rams would finish the match on a 6-1 run to take the final set 25-18.
Allen was led by sophomore outside hitter
Maliyah Spencer who had 9 kills and two blocks and hit .227 while the senior Westbrook played well with 7 kills, 5 blocks, two digs, and an ace and hit a team-best .455. Junior right side hitter, Ross, also managed 5 kills on just one error to hit .211 with two blocks and three digs. Junior Middle blocker
Taylor Lawrence added 3 kills and four blocks as well.
Lopez also played well defensively collecting 10 digs, 4 assists, and three service aces while fellow DS/Libero
Jayla Neely had 5 digs and 2 assists. The setting duo of sophomore
Lillian Williams and senior
Kayla Chambliss combined for 20 assists and 16 digs with Chambliss recording 12 digs and 2 kills and an ace herself.
UP NEXT
Allen will next return to action on the road Wednesday evening in Salisbury to take on Livingstone College in at 6:30 PM. The Yellow Jackets will then return home the following night, on Thursday, to host Morris College at 6:30 pm from Adams Gym.
