COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Allen University softball team struggled against the Benedict College pitching as they dropped both ends of their doubleheader to their rivals 14-0 in game one and 9-0 in game two at home Sunday from MLK Park.
In game one, AU senior starting pitcher
Daeshonna Beckham-Timmons limited the Lady Tigers to just one run and two hits over the first two innings but struggled with her control in the third inning as BC put up 7 runs to go up 8-0 after three. BC scored on two wild pitches, two bases-loaded walks, an error, a sac fly and a double in the long third inning. Benedict then added two more runs in the 4th and four in the 5th while the Lady Tiger starter limited the Yellow Jackets to just two hits in five innings.
Leading Allen in hits were senior middle infielders
Breighana Spencer and
Chyna Davis while RF
Michaela Barron recorded a sacrifice bunt as well. Spencer also stole a base while Davis walked as she reached base twice. Freshman catcher
Marcell Hernandez also had a hit taken away from her in the third inning for stepping out of the box as the hit would have followed Davis' single and put two runners on with no outs.Â
Beckham-Timmons (0-16) threw five innings allowing 6 hits and 11 earned runs while walking 11.
In game two, AU starter
Rachel Rolle held the Tigers scoreless in the first and 4th innings and only allowed two runs each in the 3rd and 5th innings. She also only allowed five hits over her five frames, but ran into trouble in the 2nd inning. BC scored 5 runs on mostly walks, and bases loaded fielder's choice hits before a two-run single capped the 5-run inning. Over the final three innings, BC added runs on a double, single, error and groundout.
Rolle (1-9) tossed 5 innings allowing 7 earned runs on 5 hits but walked 11 and did not record a strikeout. Freshman outfielder
Mattie Riddick registered the only hit for the Yellow Jackets as she bunted to reach base in the 5th inning.Â
Benedict improves to 11-14 overall and 4-5 in the conference while Allen drops to 1-11 in the SIAC.
The rivals will square off again Monday in game three of their conference series at 3:00 pm from MLK Park.Â
