Game Recap: Softball |

Spencer's Home Run, 3-hit Game Not Enough as Allen Falls 10-8

ORANGEBURGS.C. – The Allen University softball team fell 12-0 in 5 innings to Lincoln University (Pa.) in the third game of the HBCU Classic hosted by Claflin University on Sunday from the Orangeburg Rec Complex. The Yellow Jackets then came back later Sunday afternoon and almost pulled off their first win but fell 10-8 in 7 innings to CIAA foe Fayetteville State.

GAME 4: FSU 10, AU 8
Senior 2B Breighana Spencer was the big star in this game as she recorded 3 hits hitting .750 on the day and fell just a triple shy of the cycle. Spencer led off the game with a solo home run for the Jackets, the first home run of the season for Allen. She also recorded an RBI single and knocked a double on the afternoon and continues to lead the team in batting average at .364 for the season with a team-best eight hits.

Six different Lady Yellow Jackets recorded hits on the afternoon while junior 1B Jasmine Blaxton was the only other Jacket other than Spencer to also record an extra-base hit as she hit a RBI double in the third. Also recording base hits were outfielders Morgan Moon and junior Michaela Barron as well as infielders, sophomore Rachel Rolle and senior Chyna Davis.

After FSU took a 3-1 lead, Allen responded with their biggest innings of the season scoring 3 runs each in the 3rd and 4th innings to take a strong 7-3 lead after four. Spencer stole home to get AU their second run of the game in the 3rd before Moon scored on a fieldler's choice and Blaxton's run-scoring double. AU added runs in the 4th on a Spencer RBI single, a wild pitch and finally Davis' RBI groundout.

However, FSU mounted their comeback in the 5th inning scoring 5 runs to take an 8-7 lead. FSU scored on a sacrifice fly, wild pitch, two errors and a home run. The Broncos then added two more insurance runs in the 6th on a double before SS Chyna Davis' RBI single scored Moon in the bottom 6th to bring Allen to within two runs. However, with two runners on in the 7th, Beckham-Timmons lined out to the pitcher to end the rally.

Allen also stole five bases in the close loss with Spencer and Barron each stealing two while Moon stole one and scored 3 runs. Spencer scored 3 runs as well.

Senior pitcher Daeshonna Beckham-Timmons threw all 7 innings allowing 10 runs (7 earned) on six hits but walked seven and only struck out one as she struggled with her control for much of the game.

GAME 3: LU 12, AU 0 (5 innings)
Lincoln led just 1-0 after 2 and 1/3 innings against the Jackets before they took advantage of AU errors and wild pitching to score 7 runs in the third. The Lady Lions only managed 5 hits on the game but scored their runs in the third on 3 wild pitches, 2 passed balls, a stolen base and a groundout.
LU added their final five runs on just one RBI hit as well as scoring on an error, wild pitch, and hit by pitch.

Offensively, Allen was led by extra base hits from freshman catcher Marcell Hernandez and Spencer as they each knocked doubles.

Beckham-Timmons threw 4 innings allowing 8 earned runs (12 overall) on 5 hits while walking six and striking out three.

Allen Falls to 0-10 on the season with the hard-luck losses while FSU improves to 1-4 and Lincoln goes to 3-4. Allen will next return home on Friday to host Lincoln University again at 1:00 and 3:00 pm from MLK Park.
