Softball's Beckham-Timmons Strikes Out 10 in Loss

ORANGEBURGS.C. – The Allen University softball team fell 11-3 in 5 innings to Bluefield State (WV) in game one of their four-game swing at the HBCU Classic hosted by Claflin University on Saturday.

The Lady Yellow Jackets were led in game one by senior pitcher Daeshonna Beckham-Timmons as she came back from a tough first inning to throw four terrific innings striking out a career-high 10 batters. Bluefield State put up 9 runs in the first inning but only half of those were earned off Beckham-Timmons.

She then settled down to throw 5 innings allowing 6 earned runs (11 total) on 6 hits while walking five and striking out ten.  She recorded three strikeouts in one inning as well.

Offensively, Allen added a run in the first as senior shortstop Chyna Davis drove in senior center fielder Morgan Moon with a base hit while a bases-loaded walk by senior 2B Breighana Spencer brought home junior pinch-runner Talia Cyriaque In the fourth. Sophomore 3B Rachel Rolle then scored on a wild pitch in the 4th as well while Allen left a runner on third base each in the 3rd and 4th innings.

AU registered a season-high six hits in the game led by freshman catcher Marcell Hernandez's leadoff double in the 4th. Also recording base hits were Davis, Moon, Rolle, LF Meosha McKnight and Beckham-Timmons while Moon also stole two bases.

Allen then faced BSC at 5 PM in game two from the Orangeburg Rec Complex. Allen got out to an early 1-0 lead but, unfortunately, the Big Blue Bulldogs came back to defeat the Jackets 9-1 in game two in five innings.
AU got on the board early in the first inning as Spencer drew a leadoff walk before advancing to third on Michaela Barron's single and then coming around to score on Davis' RBI groundout. BSC tied it at one apiece in the 2nd on a triple and rbi single before adding three runs in the 3rd inning on a triple, wild pitch and an error by Barron. Bluefield then scored 4 runs in the fourth on a wild pitch, passed ball, single and error to make it 8-1 before closing out the win an inning later.

Beckham-Timmons threw 4 plus innings allowing 6 earned runs on six hits while walking three and striking out five. She finished the day with 15 Ks.

Spencer reached base again in the third leading off with a single but was caught stealing 2nd base. Moon then followed with a single but got stranded in scoring position.

Allen falls to 0-8 on the year while BSC improves to 2-0. AU will next take on Lincoln University (Pa.) at 12 Noon tomorrow and Fayetteville State (N.C.) at 4 PM from Orangeburg.
