NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Allen University men's wrestling team opened their new Conference Carolinas season on Wednesday evening falling 32-15 to Montevallo University (Ala.) at Newberry College.
Allen received wins from senior All-American
Drevon Wallace at 149 lbs and juniors
Alex Dorce and
Christian Poplous at 184 and 197 lbs respectively. Freshman
Jerrel Baskins also won an exhibition match at 174 lbs as ell.
Montevallo (1-1) got out to a 13-0 lead winning the first three weight classes over
Reco Robinson,
Nyshaad Hannon and
Eric Cain before Wallace got Allen on the board with a first period fall.
MU then increased their lead to 25-6 with back to back falls at 157 and 165 lbs. Returning senior All-American Michael Jackson then came up but lost a hard-fought decision 4-2 at 174 lbs.
Allen's back to back wins included Dorce winning by technical fall 20-5 at 184 and Poplous winning by a 16-4 major decision at 197 lbs to pull Allen to within 28-15 but it would be too late in the end as heavyweight
Chandler Allen fell 16-4.
Baskins then won 4-1 in a 184 pound bonus match as well.
Allen, now 0-2, will next be in action when they head to Virginia to compete in the Div. III Averett Open on Sunday.
