AU Women Fall One Point Short against Lees McRae

TALIAH Wesley
Box Score COLUMBIA, SC - The Allen University women's basketball team fell in a heartbreaker 64-63 to non-conference foe Lees-McRae College (NC) from Adams Gym on Saturday afternoon.

The LMC women got out to a fast start leading 12-2 before AU made a rally to trail by just six, 19-13 at the end of the first quarter. Allen then continued their good play going up by four at 25-21 on a 12-2 run of their own. However, the Lady Bobcats would finish the half on a 7-0 run to lead by three at the break 28-25 as both teams struggled to shoot the ball in the first half.

The second half saw LMC build a seven-point lead on multiple occasions, but could never quite pull away.  Allen would go on a mini 9-5 run to close the third quarter after trailing 40-33 to then head into the fourth down three, 45-42.

In the fourth, LMC would again extend their lead to that seven-point margin at 50-43 with 8 minutes to play until AU began to rally. The Jackets went on a huge 17-5 run to take a 5-point lead at 60-55 with 4 minutes to play. AU would then go up 62-59 with 2:13 to play on a Taliah Wesley jumper but that would, unfortunately, be their last basket of the game as the Bobcats closed the game on a 5-1 run for the victory. LMC had the final possession with the score tied at 63 and made the winning free throw after Allen was called for the foul. A last-second three-pointer from sophomore guard Kynew Barnwell then just missed rolling off the rim.

Wesley led the Lady Yellow Jackets with 14 points and 3 assists along with five rebounds while senior guard Kash Hankerson was the other Jacket to finish in double-figures with 12 points, a block, and 3 steals shooting 5 of 9. Sophomore forward Talayah Boxley led Allen with 6 rebounds while also scoring 6 points while fellow forward, Kasey Smith recorded nine points and three rebounds. Barnwell also finished with 9 points, two assists and a steal.

The women outscored LMC 38-36 in the second half shooting 39 percent overall for the game, but just 25 percent from three and 63 percent from the foul line.

The AU women will next turn around and host Morris College on Monday evening at 5:30 pm.
