AU Volleyball Stuns Savannah State in 5 Sets

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Led by senior setter Kayla Chambliss' triple-double, the Lady Yellow Jacket volleyball team stunned third place Savannah State in five sets at home Monday evening.

Chambliss' triple-double of 10 kills, 29 assists, and 11 digs is believed to be the first one at Allen in at least the last five years. She also added 4 aces and 3 blocks as she played stellar all night. Allen won the first set 25-23 on 14 kills before falling 19-25 in the second set, also with 14 kills. AU came back strong with a solid third set win 25-22 before SSU upped their play to take the fourth set 25-22 on 14 kills hitting .343. 

However, Allen went on a 7-1 run in the fifth set to lead 10-6 before increasing it to 13-7 forcing a Tiger timeout. AU then held off the Tigers to win 15-13 on a Tahmiah Lawson kill.
Lawson finished with 14 kills, hitting .119 with 3 digs while sophomore outside hitter Maliyah Spencer also added 11 kills and 3 digs and hit .188.

Allen's middle hitters also played well as senior Marlaysia Westbrook and Taylor Lawrence combined for 21 kills and only 5 errors. Westbrook hit a team-best .529 with 11 kills,four blocks, an ace and 3 digs while Lawrence had 10 kills, 7 blocks (3 solo) and hit .304.

Defenders Myra Lopez and Jayla Neely also played well in the back row combining for 42 digs while Lopez led with 31 as the libero along with 5 assists and two aces. Freshman setter Jayda Woodson also played well with 20 assists, two aces, and 8 digs while fellow freshman right side hitter Dacia Lowery recorded 5 kills, 2 blocks, and 4 digs as well. 

Allen totaled more points, aces, and blocks than the Tigers as well.

Allen improves to 10-9 on the season and 4-8 in the conference while SSU drops to 11-7 and 7-6 in the SIAC. AU will next return to action on Wednesday on the road at Paine College in Augusta at 6:30 pm.
