Volleyball Drops 5-set Thriller to SC State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. - The Allen University volleyball team fell in a 5-set thriller on the road Tuesday night against D-1 foe S.C. State. 

SC State edged the Yellow Jacket 25-22 in the first set on 15 kills hitting .355 while Allen tallied 12 kills and also hit a quality number at .233. AU then dominated the Bulldogs in the second set winning 25-13 on 11 kills hitting .474. SCSU then came back in the third set to roll to a 25-14 win hitting .269 while Allen struggled with 8 errors.

In the fourth set, the Jackets pulled out a tight win 25-22 on 14 kills hitting .273. However, in the fifth set, SCSU got out to a 4-1 lead before Allen rallied to win five of the next 7 points to tie the match at 6. The Bulldogs then rolled off the next few pints going on a 7-3 run to lead 13-9. Allen then crawled to within two at 13-11 but could get no closer as SCSU closed out the win.

Sophomore OH Maliyah Spencer led Allen with 15 kills hitting .323 while freshman RSH Tahmiah Lawson recorded 14 kills while hitting .300 with a block. Senior setter Kayla Chambliss also had a good game leading with 25 assists with 5 kills, 2 aces, 4 blocks, and 5 digs. 
Senior middle hitter Marlaysia Westbrook also played well grabbing 7 kills with 7 blocks (2 solo) while middle hitters Taylor Lawrence and freshman Dacia Lowery combined for 6 kills while Lawrence had 2 blocks.

Freshman libero Myra Lopez had a terrific defensive game leading the team with 25 digs, 3 assists and an ace while freshman setter Jayda Woodson put up 19 assists and 4 digs.


Allen falls to 8-8 on the season while SCSU picked up their first win. Allen will finally return home on Thursday to host Clinton College at 7 PM.
