Allen Volleyball Sweeps JCSU to Open Season; Falls to Clinton

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Allen University women's volleyball team rolled to a season-opening sweep of Johnson C. Smith University 3-0 on Saturday. The match was played at nearby Richland County Recreation Facility. Allen then took on Clinton College (S.C.) from the Rec Center later Saturday and fell 0-3 (23-25, 16-25, 22-25).

Against JCSU, the Yellow Jackets got out to a big lead in set one running out to a 13-5 advantage before hanging on to hold off a JCSU rally to take it 26-24. A back and forth second set then saw the Jackets use 13 total kills while hitting .175 to win it 25-22. AU then finished off the Golden Bulls as they rallied from behind in the third to win it 25-23 on 10 kills. 

Junior outside hitter Natalia Maciejewska led the Yellow Jackets with 8 kills while hitting .136 and also tallied 7 digs. Freshman hitter Maliyah Spencer also played well recording 7 kills with 3 digs and 2 aces. Junior Kayla Chambliss led the setters with 17 assists while freshman libero Jayla Neely led the team with an impressive 21 digs. 

Freshman RS Cadence Leaks also put down 6 kills with 2 blocks while fellow freshman DS/OH Janae Green had 9 digs and 4 kills. Junior Middle Marlaysia Westbrook also led the team with 7 total blocks and put down 4 kills as well.

A tight first set vs. Clinton (2-2) saw the visitors post 15 kills for the 25-23 win holding Allen to just 7 kills. Clinton then controlled the second set en route to a 25-16 win. The third set was very tight again with Allen posting 11 kills but fell 22-25.

Leaks led the Yellow Jackets with 7 kills and 2 blocks while Chambliss led with 13 assists as the setter. Middle hitters Westbrook and Spencer also combined for 10 kills and 6 total blocks in the loss. Neely led with 10 digs as the libero.

The Lady Jackets, now 1-1, will next be in action on Friday at Morris College at 6:00 PM.
