COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Allen University football team will open their 2022 season on the road at Newberry College tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 3 at 6:00 PM from Newberry, SC. This will be the first meeting between the nearby schools in recent history.Â
The Yellow Jackets will then open at home next Saturday, Sept. 10, at Westwood High School in Blythewood, S.C. Kickoff is slated for a 6:00 PM start.
Allen, led by head coach
Teddy Keaton, is coming off a 4-5 season last year including wins over J.C. Smith, Livingstone, Central St., and Columbus St.
The Yellow Jackets' offense was led by RB
Beau Herrington's 514 yards on the ground and five touchdowns while the air attack is guided by quarterbackÂ
David Wright who threw for nearly 2,600 yards last season along with 24 touchdowns and a 59.4 completion percentage while WR Â
Jamal Jones led the receiving corp with 60 catches for 877 yards and 8 touchdowns and 109 yards per game.
Fellow WR
Jayden Horace recorded 36 receptions for 562 yards (15.6 avg.) and four touchdowns and averaged 80.3 receiving yards per game.Â
Defensively, linebacker
Gary Bourrage led the team with 50 tackles and 2 fumble recoveries last season while DL
Kerry Thompson recorded six sacks. OLB Kylen Pugh also returns having led the team with two interceptions last year as well.
Newberry is coming off a 10-3 season in 2021 where they made it to the second round of the D-2 playoffs.Â
