Wrestling Goes 3-2 at Cougar Duals to place 3rd

DANVILLE, Va. - The Allen University Wrestling team went 3-2 on Sunday at the Cougar Duals hosted by Div. III Averett University in southern Virginia.

D-3 Averett defeated AU in the opening match of the day Sunday morning by a score fo 26-11 before Allen came back to win their next two matches by dominating scores of 48-12 over Southwest VA College and 46-3 over D-1 Club James Madison University. The Jackets then fell 45-6 to Newport News Apprentice (Va.) in their fourth match of the day before AU finished their day with a 36-13 win over rival St. Andrews University in the third-place match of Pool B.

AVERETT 26, ALLEN 11
In the first match, Allen was led by wins from junior Mike Jackson at 184 lbs, freshman Emmanuel Velasquez at Heavyweight and junior Drevon Wallace at 149 lbs. Jackson won by a 12-6 decision while Velasquez also won by a 6-2 decision. The match began at 174 lbs where Terrence Mills fell by a close 11-7 decision. Junior Christian Poplous also fell 3-1 at 197 lbs as the dual was tied at 6 points apiece after the first four bouts.

Unfortunately, Averett then won the next three bouts in the lightweights to go up by a 17-6 score. Allen lost close bouts at 133 and 141 lbs as junior Nyshaad Hannon fell 7-6 at 133 and freshman Quincy Gash fell 7-5 at 141 lbs. Wallace then won 18-0 via technical fall to pull the Jackets within 6 points at 17-11, but junior Moise Toussaint fell 3-1 at 157 as Averett clinched the match.

ALLEN 48, SW VA CC 12
Allen rolled by in their second match of the day using 7 forfeits to go up 42-0. Mills then put the match away at 174 lbs winning by a six-point fall in the second period while Ya'Donnis Hardaway and D'Andre Wilkerson lost tough bouts at 165 and 197 lbs respectively. 

ALLEN 46, JMU 3
AU used four forfeits in this dual to go up 24-0 early. After a tight 8-6 loss by Hannon at 133, Wallace came back to grab a quick fall and put Allen back on top. Toussaint then stepped up and won by a major decision 18-8 before Hardaway grabbed a forfeit win. Mills then won by a second period fall at 174 before Jackson won 5-2 at 184. Poplous then capped off the win by a 9-6 decision at 197.

NNA 45, AU 6
Then in the final match of Pool B, Allen ran into a buzzsaw and veteran team from Virginia. The ship-building school won 9 of 10 bouts vs the Jackets with Jackson grabbing the only win at 184 lbs winning by a second period fall. Velasquez then fell by a tight 2-0 decision at HWT before a string of three more falls for Apprentice. Wallace then dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision at 149.

ALLEN 36, SAU 13
In the consolation dual, Allen won 7 of 10 bouts in the defeat of St. Andrews late Sunday afternoon. 125 pounder Justin Kelly got things rolling with a first period fall before Hannon and Gash lost decisions over the next two weight classes. SAU then got a surprise fall over Wallace in the first period to put the Knights up 13-6 early. However, The Yellow Jackets would then reel off the next 6 weights with victories to grab the win. 

Toussaint recorded the first win by a 10-5 decision at 157 before Hardaway won by injury default. Mills and Jackson then each won by first period falls at 174 and 814 lbs. Poplous then grabbed a 3-1 overtime win at 197 before Velasquez closed out the meet with a big fall.

Allen improves to 6-3 on the season and will next have the rest of the month off until resuming action on January 7 down in Montgomery, AL against Huntingdon College at Noon.
