Gary Harper, in his third season at Allen University, is a veteran collegiate football coach with more than 40 years of experience leading, developing, and mentoring student-athletes across multiple NCAA programs. Known for his disciplined defensive philosophy and ability to elevate player performance, Harper has served in key leadership roles including Associate Head Coach, Defensive Coordinator, and Linebacker/Defensive Line Coach at institutions such as Springfield High School (OH), Central State University, Alabama A&M, Benedict College, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Savannah State University, Morris Brown College, and Tuskegee University. His coaching career is marked by consistent program development, strategic game-planning, and a commitment to academic accountability.
Throughout his career, Harper has coached numerous athletes to postseason honors and has overseen every aspect of defensive operations-from film analysis and scouting reports to strength and conditioning program design. His résumé reflects repeated trust from athletic departments, demonstrated by his long tenure in coordinator and associate head coaching roles, as well as responsibilities in recruiting, academic compliance, and staff supervision. As noted in his résumé, he "coached student-athletes on the fundamentals, scheme, and individual technique for their mental/physical development," a theme that has defined his coaching identity.
Beyond football, Harper has contributed to education and operations in meaningful ways. He has served as a K-6 Physical Education teacher, a facilities manager, and an operations manager roles that strengthened his administrative, organizational, and leadership skill sets. His early career also includes significant experience coaching softball, track and field, earning championships and developing athletes across multiple disciplines.
A former standout player himself, Harper earned numerous collegiate honors, including First Team Conference Defensive Player of the Year and NAIA First Team All-American. He is a member of the American Football Coaches Association and the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Athletic Hall of Fame.
