A former All-American defensive back with more than 30 years of coaching history, Charles Huff is entering his first season at Allen University in 2024.
A Portal, Georgia native, Huff was a three-time All-American at Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina. Following his graduation in 1984, Huff enjoyed a four-year NFL career that included two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers (1985-86) and two with the Atlanta Falcons (1987-88). He joined the 49ers the same season as Hall of Famer Jerry Rice and played in the secondary alongside another Hall of Famer, Ronnie Lott.
Huff began his coaching career in 1989 at his alma mater, Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina, coaching running backs and defensive backs for two seasons. From there, Huff served as a defensive assistant coach at Murray State from 1991-92. Following a season as defensive backs and assistant head coach at West Alabama, Huff was named the defensive coordinator at Austin Peay State, a position he held for the 1994-96 seasons. While at Austin Peay, Huff saw all four starters of his secondary from the 1995 season go on to play in the NFL.
In 1997, Huff joined the FBS ranks as the Special Teams Coordinator at the University of Central Florida (UCF). During his tenure with the Knights, Huff recruited and coached four-time Pro Bowler and two-time Super Bowl Champion Asante Samuel. After a six season stay in Orlando, Florida, Huff made coaching stops as a defensive coordinator at Norfolk State (2004), Florida A&M (2005-06), and Miles College (2007), and as a defensive assistant at Northern Arizona (2011-12), Stetson (2014), Hampton (2017), and Alabama A&M (2018-2020).
No stranger to the SIAC, Huff has spent time as the defensive coordinator at Albany State (2015-16) and the special teams, passing game, and recruiting coordinator at Fort Valley State (2021).
Huff joins Allen after serving as the defensive coordinator at Clark Atlanta University for the past two seasons.
