COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Allen University football quarterback Brent Upshaw Jr. has been named the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Newcomer of the Week following his standout performance in the Yellow Jackets' season-opening victory over Livingstone College.
Upshaw Jr. made an immediate impact in his Allen debut, leading the Yellow Jackets to a 37-16 victory over Livingstone on August 29 in Salisbury, N.C. The junior quarterback completed 17-of-25 passes for 333 yards and two touchdowns, while finishing with a long completion of 65 yards. He also contributed four rushing attempts for nine yards.
Upshaw Jr. connected with Deveon Williams on a 53-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to give Allen a 14-10 advantage. Later in the third quarter, he found Nanders Lawrence for a 37-yard touchdown, extending the Yellow Jackets' lead to 30-10.
The performance helped Allen generate 522 total yards of offense, including 333 yards through the air, as the Yellow Jackets opened the season with a decisive victory. Upshaw Jr. finished the afternoon without an interception while completing 68 percent of his passes.
The SIAC Newcomer of the Week honor marks a strong start to Upshaw Jr.'s career with the Yellow Jackets and recognizes his ability to make an immediate impact at the quarterback position.
Allen will return to action Saturday, September 5, when the Yellow Jackets host Florida Memorial University at 4 p.m. in Columbia, S.C. Bolden Stadium
