COLUMBIA, S.C. --- The Allen University women's basketball team emerged victorious at Benedict Saturday, 79-71, to sweep the two-game season series against the Tigers.
The final road game of the regular season did not begin the way Allen intended as the Yellow Jackets trailed Benedict at the end of the first quarter, 24-14. However, the opening quarter would be the only one of the day where Allen would be outscored as the Yellow Jackets cut into the deficit they faced in the second quarter to head into halftime down by just six points, 42-36. Allen continued to climb towards their first lead of the day in the third quarter, and finally jumped in front with 5:19 remaining in the third, 45-44. At the end of the third, Allen trailed by four points, 59-55. The fourth quarter was where Allen completed their comeback effort. With the game tied 63-63 with 6:31 left,
Mya Johnson connected on a jump shot to put Allen ahead for the final time, 65-53.
Taliah Wesley led the Yellow Jackets with one of the top performances in the SIAC this season. The senior guard recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 21 points and 19 rebounds. Her rebounding total is tied for the most in a game this season among SIAC competitors. Freshman
Eboni Clay added 14 points and four assists, and
Peighton Jambor totaled 12 points to help lead Allen to their seventeenth win of the season.
The Yellow Jackets conclude their regular season on Wednesday, February 26 at home against Clark Atlanta. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside John Hurst Adams Gymnasium, with a senior day presentation to take place pregame.
