Down to the Wire: Allen University Pushes #1 Benedict to the Brink in Instant SIAC Classic

In a game filled with explosive plays, defensive fireworks, and heart-pounding drama, the Yellow Jackets came up just short—proving they belong in the SIAC’s championship conversation.

Game Recap: Football | 10/4/2025 | By Phil Jackson, Allen University Sports Information Director

Columbia, SC — In front of a buzzing crowd and against the top-ranked team in the SIAC, Allen University Football delivered a performance that was gritty, explosive, and drenched in heart. Although the Yellow Jackets fell 38–28 to #1 Benedict College, their effort was a declaration to the rest of the conference: we're coming.

Back-and-Forth Brawl from the First Whistle

Benedict struck first with a surgical opening drive, capping it off with a touchdown that seemed to foreshadow dominance. But Allen had other plans.

On the very next play, sophomore return specialist Nanders Lawrence sent the stadium into a frenzy with a jaw-dropping 88-yard kickoff return, setting up a 1-yard QB sneak by Jamir Dismukes to tie it up 7–7.

The first quarter ended with Benedict regaining control, extending their lead to 21–7. But the second quarter belonged entirely to Coach Cedric Pearl's Yellow Jackets.

Second-Quarter Storm: Dismukes Strikes Twice

Junior quarterback Jamir Dismukes showcased why he's one of the top signal-callers in NCAA Division II, even under pressure.

He connected first with Calvin Parker on a clutch 26-yard back-of-the-end-zone TD, standing tall in the pocket and delivering a laser while taking a big hit.

Minutes later, he launched a beautiful 80-yard bomb to Marcus Fleming, tying the game 21–21 before the halftime break.

SIAC's Top Rusher Delivers Again

After halftime, Fabian Duncan—Allen's record-breaking running back—continued his dominance with an 11-yard touchdown run, giving the Yellow Jackets their first lead of the game at 28–21. The offensive line created just enough daylight, and Duncan did the rest, powering into the end zone to swing momentum Allen's way. Duncan finished with a aggressive 16 rushes for 61 yards.

Turnovers & Takeaways: Allen's Defense Answers the Call

This wasn't just an offensive showcase — the Allen defense made huge plays in key moments.

  • Aeron Gresham, sophomore defensive back, had two critical interceptions, including a spectacular one-handed grab in the end zone that left fans stunned.
  • JayShawn Smalls, sophomore linebacker, added a third INT for Allen.
  • Senior DB DeJuan Hughes led the team with 12 total tackles, flying around the field and making key stops.
  • Smalls and freshman Jhyheem Pittman contributed 7 and 5 tackles, respectively.

Despite these defensive highlights, Benedict clawed their way back with a field goal and two late rushing touchdowns that ultimately sealed the game.

Coach Pearl's Message: "Discipline Will Be the Difference"

After the game, Head Coach Cedric Pearl was clear:

"We fought like dogs. We had them on the ropes. But if we clean up our discipline— mental lapses—this is a completely different outcome. We're not just playing football. We're building a program."

Allen committed key penalties and turnovers that shifted momentum late, but no one walked away questioning their toughness or heart.

What Comes Next: Redemption Still Loading

With the loss, Allen drops to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in SIAC play, but if this game proved anything, it's that Allen belongs on the big stage.

They went toe-to-toe with the SIAC's #1 team—and nearly walked away with the crown.

Every week, this team is evolving. And every game, they're proving they're not far from greatness.

Yellow Jacket Nation: keep your eyes on this squad. There's more football to play, and a championship story still left to write.

Next up for the Allen University will be Savannah State University this Saturday October 11, 2025 - kick off at 6:00PM.
