SAVANNAH, G.A. --- For third time this season, Allen men's basketball emerged out of overtime victorious as the Yellow Jackets took down Savannah State Monday, 68-65, to secure a season-sweep of the Tigers.
In their second meeting in seven days, the Yellow Jackets and Tigers battled on the hardwood and, once again, it was a closely-contested matchup. In the beginning of the first half, Savannah State jumped in front first, leading for the first nine minutes of the game. However, Allen took a one-point lead with ten minutes to go before halftime and held tight to it until the Tigers sank a jump shot with 40 seconds to go to take a 32-31 lead into the break. The Yellow Jackets started the second half on a 12-4 run, accentuated by an
Austin James fast break layup to go ahead, 44-36, with 15:27 to play. Fast forward to the final moments, although Savannah State had climbed back in front, Allen had the final possession with four seconds left in regulation, trailing 61-59. With the game on the line,
G'Shan Aldridge drove into the paint and connected on the game-tying bucket to force overtime. In the extra period, all seven of Allen's points came at the free-throw line but it would be enough to pair with their defense that held SSU to make just one of their eight shots across the extra ten minutes.
James led the way for Allen with a season-high 21 points to go along with eight rebounds.
Malik Lacewell continued his strong recent stretch, scoring double-figures for the third straight game with 16 points. Aldridge completed the trio of Yellow Jackets with a double-digit performance with 12 points in the victory.
Allen continues their four-game road trip with a visit to Albany State Saturday, Feb. 10 at 4:00 p.m.
