Allen Defeats Miles For First Time in Program History

COLUMBIA, S.C. --- To close out their final home game of the fall semester, the Allen University women's basketball team defeated Miles College Monday, 79-63. The win marks the first for the Yellow Jackets over the Golden Bears in program history, as Miles had won the previous seven meetings. 

After a low scoring first quarter, with Miles ahead 9-8, Allen's offense found their rhythm in the second quarter with a 21-point showing. At the break, the Yellow Jackets were ahead by six points, 29-23. The third quarter was where Allen began to create separation on the scoreboard. Through the first five minutes of the third, Allen's defense held Miles to just two made shots while the Yellow Jackets offense continued to find success and built a lead that reached 20 points, 56-36, with two minutes left in the quarter. The lead proved to be enough as Allen held on in the fourth quarter to improve to 7-3 overall (3-1 SIAC) on the season. 

Mya Johnson led the Yellow Jackets in scoring a set a new career-high with 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting. The senior guard also tallied three assists and four steals in the win. Monday night was also saw another strong performance from Taliah Wesley. The Blakely, Georgia native scored 20 points, including shooting a perfect 8-for-8 at the free-throw line, to record her third straight 20+ point showing and her fourth of the season. Wesley also recorded a career-best seven steals on the defensive end. In the post, forward Kacey Smith notched a double-double with 10 points and a team-best 11 rebounds. 

Allen wraps up their December schedule with a trip to Tuskegee, Alabama on Saturday, December 21. Tip-off at Tuskegee is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. eastern.
