COLUMBIA, SC -- In an SIAC east division clash that saw 15 total lead changes, Allen women's basketball fell in a close battle with Albany State Monday, 64-62.
On a night where neither team led by more than six at point during the game, a back-and-fourth first quarter set the tone early on Monday night. Seven different Yellow Jackets scored in the first quarter with
Mya Johnson adding in three rebounds in six minutes of action. Later in the first half, Allen outscored Albany State in the second quarter, 20-16, to go into half leading by two. Fast forward to the final moments of the fourth quarter, still tightly a contested game, as Allen trailed by one point with 1:23 left in the game,
JuJu Harrington connected on a layup to push the Yellow Jackets ahead, 62-61. Albany State responded with a layup of their own to reclaim the lead, then Johnson tied the game with four seconds remaining with a free-throw, 62-62. However, on their final possession Albany State's Milana Holmes was fouled and made both free-throws to close out the game.
Johnson led Allen with 13 points, and a co-team best six rebounds along with
Talayah Boxley who grabbed six rebounds and scored six points. Harrington finished in double-figures for the third time this season with 10 points on (4-6) shooting from the floor and a pair of made free-throws.
Taliah Wesley added 10 points off-the-bench in the effort, as well.
The Yellow Jackets now look towards the "Battle for Taylor Street" in a rivalry matchup against Benedict College Saturday, Jan. 27 at 1:00 p.m.
