COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Allen University softball team got a career outing from senior Pitcher
Daeshonna Beckham-Timmons on Wednesday as she struck out a combined 23 Livingstone batters on the day while the YellowJackets also turned a triple play, a program-first for Allen.
Beckham began the day striking out a career-best 13 women in game one, but Allen's bats went cold as they fell 5-2. Beckham then struck out 10 more in game two, but LC picked up the 9-3 win. The triple play occurred in the 6th inning in game two. The inning began with a LC walk followed by an RBI single which gave the Lady Bears a 7-3 lead. However, with runners on first and second and no outs, Livingstone lined a ball to 2B
Mattie Riddick for the first out. Riddick then flipped the ball to 1B
Jasmine Blaxton to double the runner off first before Blaxton fired the ball to shortstop
Bree Spencer at second base to double off the runner at second as well to complete the first triple play in AU softball history.
Beckham tossed her best game of the year in game one as she threw all 7 innings allowing just 4 hits and only one earned run as five Allen errors led to most of the LC runs. Beckham then walked just three batters while striking out 13. During Beckham's brilliant outing, the senior struck out the side in the third inning while she struck out at least two batters in 5 of the 7 innings of game one.
LC led only 3-0 heading into the 6th before grabbing two insurance runs on a passed ball and RBI single. Allen then mounted a rally in the bottom of the 6th as catcher
Marcell Hernandez led off with a single and stole second before advancing to third on a throwing error. Spencer then walked and stole second before Riddick drove in Hernandez with an RBI groundout while Beckham then knocked in Spencer with her RBI single.
During game two, LC got out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning before an RBI groundout from senior CF
Morgan Moon brought home Spencer in the bottom half. The bears added three more runs to take a 6-1 lead into the 5th. But the Yellow Jackets mounted another rally in the 5th loading the bases with zero outs before a two-run single from Beckham brought in Spencer and Hernandez to make it 6-3. However, two strikeouts followed to end the threat. LC then tacked on two runs in the 7th on a wild pitch and passed ball to grab the win.
Beckham again threw all 7 innings allowing 6 runs on 6 hits while walking five and striking out 10. Recording hits in game two were Beckham, Riddick, Blaxton, Hernandez, and senior 3B
Chyna Davis.
Livingstone improves to 3-12 on the season. Allen will next return to action on Saturday as they head across town to battle Columbia International at 1 PM weather permitting.
