BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. - The 10th ranked Allen University football team held off SIAC foe Clark Atlanta University 35-27 on Saturday night scoring four touchdowns in the second half to pick up their 5th win of the season.
The Yellow Jackets were led in the win by junior RB
Beau Herrington as he rushed for a season-high 157 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 7 yards/carry. QB
David Wright also threw for 364 yards and two scores to record his 6th straight game of 300-plus pass yards on the season. Herrington also had 41 yards receiving as he recorded 198 yards of total offense on the night.
Leading the WRs was senior
Montrell White who caught 4 balls for 96 yards including a huge 63-yard TD as he sprinted down the field outrunning the whole Panther defense for the game-changing score that put Allen back in front 21-17 at the end of the third quarter. Also playing well was senior WR
Deyandre Ruffin as he led the team with 7 catches for 95 yards.
A scoreless first quarter led to just two touchdowns between the two schools in the second quarter as CAU got on the board first with a 51-yard run from their RB before Allen put together a impressive 13-play 81-yard drive to tie the game on a Herrington one-yard run with just 1:35 remaining in the half.
CAU jumped back out in front quickly after halftime recovering an Allen fumble on the third quarter kickoff to go up 10-7 on a field goal. AU, though, came right back going on a fast 6-play 82-yard drive to go up 14-10 on Herrington's 10-yard run for his second score of the game.
After CAU (0-6) went back up 17-14 on a 73-yard drive, Wright to White happened that had Allen back up 21-17 going into the fourth. Allen then extended their lead to 11 early in the fourth with a 8-play 54-yard drive ending with Herrington's third score of the night coming on an 8-yard run with 14 minutes to play.
The Panthers though, would not go away scoring on a 16-yd pass to get within four at 28-24 with 12 minutes to play. The Jackets then got some breathing room, though, going on a 6-play 44-yard drive to go up 35-24 on a
David Wright 12-yard TD pass to junior WR
Jamal Jones with 4:18 to play. Jones finished with 6 catches for 39 yards. CAU would add a late field goal with 2:30 to play to get within eight, but their onside kick attempt barely fell into Allen's hands as AU clinched the win.
Defensively, Allen was led by senior LB
Gary Bourrage's 9 tackles and senior CB
Dahlil Wilkins' 4 pass breakups and 7 tackles. Senior safety
Sharrod Simmon also tallied an interception and made 5 tackles while linebackers
Justin Eaton and
Kirkland Boone combined for 10 tackles. Picking up a sack was senior defensive tackle
Marques Sherman as he also had 5 tackles, a TFL, and a pass breakup on a QB hurry. Picking up fumble recoveries on the night were senior safety
Diquan Brown, senior LB MC Henderson, and freshman safety
Kameron Brantley.
The 5-1 start to the season is the best in school history and the most wins ever in school history while Allen also clinched at least a .500 season for the first time ever. The three SIAC wins are also the most ever as AU sits in a tie for 5th place in the conference.
AU will look to get their sixth win when they head back on the road next Saturday to Albany State (4-2, 4-0) to take on the Rams at 2:00 Pm.
