JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Allen University volleyball team dropped both ends of their conference doubleheader on the road at Edward Waters University on Sunday afternoon.
EWU won the first match handily taking it 25-20, 25-16 and 25-19. Allen then almost upset the top team in the SIAC East falling 23-25, 25-22, 12-25, and 23-25 in their second match.
Match 1: EWU 3, AU 0
In the first match, Allen lost a tight first set 25-20 as they recorded more kills than the Tigers 13-11 as Allen hit .125. EWU then controlled the second set 25-16 with 13 kills hitting .313 while Allen hit .121 with 10 kills. AU feel 25-19 in the third set with just 7 kills.
Sophomore hitter
Maliyah Spencer led with 8 kills hitting .167 while fellow outside hitter,
Tahmiah Lawson totaled 5 kills. Senior setter
Kayla Chambliss played the best match recording 19 assists and 14 digs with 6 kills for a double-double. She also had an ace and 2 blocks while fellow setter, freshman
Jayda Woodson tallied 8 assists and 9 digs. Middle hitters
Taylor Lawrence and
Sydney Ross also combined for 6 kills and 3 blocks while libero
Myra Lopez gathered 10 digs and 3 assists.
Match 2: EWU 3, AU 1
In the second match of the day, the two squads were much more competitive with 3 of the 4 sets being decided by 3 points or less. EWU won the first 25-23 behind a stellar 19 kills hitting .321Â while Allen had 10 kills and hit .188. EWU led by five at 19-14 in the set before Allen went on a 9-5 run to get within one point, but fell in the end on a kill.
The second set saw Allen jump out to an 8-4 lead before the Tigers rallied to go up 15-12. Then after trialing 20-19, Allen would finish the set on a 6-2 run using four kills to tie the match at one set apiece. Allen had 14 kills and hit .265 in set two.
The third set was, unfortunately, dominated by EWU as they ran out to a 12-3 lead and didn't let up in winning 25-12. The final set then saw some drama as the Lady Jackets ran off 8 points in a row to go up 13-4 in the set. AU would extend their lead to 15-5 and eventfully led 17-10 until EWU found their game and rallied to get within two at 21-19. EWU then went up 23-21 before Allen tied it at 23 with a kill from senior middle
Marlaysia Westbrook. However, a kill from EWU's top player and an attack error from Allen saw EWU steal the fourth set and the match.
Spencer led the way again hitting an impressive 15 kills at a clip of .375 along with an ace, a block and 4 digs while Chambliss posted another double-double of 13 assists and 11 digs to go with her 4 kills and ace. Ross also played well in the middle tallying 9 kills and 3 blocks and hitting .129 while fellow middle, Lawrence had 5 kills and 3 blocks. Libero Lopez totaled 17 digs with 3 assists and an ace while fellow DS Nat Maciejewska had 12 digs and an assist. Woodson recorded 16 assists and six digs as well while Lawson had 6 kills, 4 digs, and two blocks.
AU falls to 10-12 with the losses and 4-10 in the SIACÂ while EWU improves their conference-best mark to 13-1 and 17-5 overall. Allen now returns home for five of their final six matches of the season starting with Albany State at 6 Pm on Thursday.
