Box Score FAIRFIELD, AL - The 6th ranked Allen University football team played well for three quarters on Saturday night, but #5 Miles College used a big 28-point third quarter to outscore the Yellow Jackets 28-21 from Alabama.
Allen got off to a strong start after a scoreless first quarter scoring two touchdowns in the 2nd quarter en route to a 14-0 lead at halftime. RS Sophomore QB
David Wright rushed in for the score from 19 yards out to put Allen up 6-0 early in the second as they took advantage of a Miles turnover in the Allen end of the field.
The Jackets then put together a terrific 5-play 99-yard drive in just 71 seconds to end the second quarter ending with a 52-yard pass from Wright to junior RB
Beau Herrington to put Allen up 12-0. A throw from Wright to WR
Armone Harris for the two-point conversion then had Allen with the 14-0 lead.
Miles then scored their first TD just 4 minutes into the third on a 52-yard pass before intercepting Wright's pass on Allen's next possession and returning it 60 yards for the score to tie the game at 14 apiece. Miles then took their first lead with 6:30 to go in the third on another long pass to go up 21-14.Â
Allen would then go on a 10 play 81 yard drive to tie the game at 21 with a Herrington 2-yard rush TD. However, Miles would come right back with a touchdown of their own to retake the lead as they completed a 58-yard pass on the first play of their next drive to lead 28-21 at the end of three quarters.
The fourth quarter ended up being scoreless as Allen thought they had tied the game at 28 when sophomore corner
Kevin Graham intercepted a Miles pass and returned it 52 yards for the tying touchdown midway through the fourth. Unfortunately, it would be for naught as AU was tagged with a personal foul penalty which put Allen back on offense at their own 43.Â
On the ensuing possession, Allen would drive methodically down the field getting to Miles' 8 yard line before Herrington rushed it in for the score to tie the game. However, again the Yellow Jackets would be stymied with another penalty, this time holding that backed Allen up. Then, unfortunately, AU coughed it up on a fumble on a strip-sack fumble with just two minutes to play. AU would then get the ball back with 1:21 to play and would drive all the way to the Miles 6-yard line with a Wright 26-yard rush but time would run out on the Jackets as Miles hung on for the win.
Allen dominated the game for three quarters outscoring the Miles offense 431-335 and accumulating ten more first downs than the Bears but two costly turnovers and penalties would be the undoing for Allen in the end. Wright completed 29 of 42 passes for 315 yards and a touchdown and two picks while rushing for over 50 yards and a score. Herrington totaled 159 yards of total offense rushing for 58 and catching 8 passes for 101 yards and a score. Senior WRÂ
Deyandre Ruffin also played well grabbing 5 receptions for 92 yards while fellow senior wideout
Montrell White caught 6 balls for 58 yards.
Defensively, Allen was led by senior linebacker
Gary Bourrage who had 11 tackles and a sack while fellow LB
Kayleb Pierce had 10 tackles and a sack. DBs
Sharrod Simmon, Graham, and
Diquan Brown also combined for 15 tackles while freshman DL
Terrin Brown forced two fumbles. LB MC Henderson also recorded a sack and two tackles.Â
Allen falls to 6-2 on the season and 4-2 in the SIAC while Miles improves to 6-2 and 5-1 in SIAC play. AU will now return home for homecoming next Saturday at 2 PM where AU will also honor their seniors against Edward Waters.
