COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Allen University women's basketball team played a terrific defensive game in holding off SIAC rival Clark Atlanta 70-60 from Adams Gym on Monday evening.
Allen's second straight win improves them to 5-6 overall and 3-5 in the conference. Clark falls to 7-7 overall and 6-3 in the SIAC.
The Lady Jackets trailed for the only time in the game at 7-2 in the first quarter before going on an 18-5 run to take a 20-12 lead. Allen then outscored the Lady Panthers 13-10 in a low-scoring second quarter to take a 33-26 halftime lead. CAU would go on a 9-2 run to start the third quarter to tie the Jackets at 35 apiece.
However, Allen then out-hustled the Panthers in a foul-filled third quarter 18-16 overall as AU would lead 51-42 heading into the fourth. CAU could then get no closer than four points throughout the fourth with Allen closing the game on an 8-2 run to win the quarter 19-18 and grab the 10-point win.
The Allen women shot nearly 47 percent overall for the game while holding the Panthers to just 35 percent shooting and zero percent from three-point range.
Junior guard
Destinee Jamison-Whitfield led the Yellow Jackets with 18 points on 8 of 14 shooting while grabbing a team-best 7 rebounds, a block, and a team-high 4 steals. Senior forward
Cardrina Nolen also added 10 points while freshman guard
Tonai Moore set a season-high with 11 points, 4 reb0unds, 2 steals and three treys.
Also playing well was junior guard
Kayla Pope as she scored 9 points with 3 rebounds, a team-best 5 assists and a steal while the guard duo of junior
Keyshuna Fair and senior
Jazeem Bethea combined for 11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 2 steals. Bethea also added 2 assists and 2 blocks.
Allen will next be in action on Thursday when they head to Augusta to battle Paine College for a 6 PM tip.
