YELLOW JACKETS COME FROM BEHIND TO DEFEAT JOHNSON C. SMITH

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- With less than a minute remaining in the game, David Wright III connected with Beau Harrington for a 7-yard touchdown pass to lift Allen over Johnson C. Smith, 20-19, on Saturday at Irwin Belk Complex.

AU (1-1) trailed 7-6 in the in the third quarter before Harrington's 10-yard touchdown run helped give the Yellow Jackets a 14-7 lead. Harrington scored AU's three touchdowns for the game -- rushing for two scores before catching the game winning pass. He finshed with 61 yards on 22 attempts (2.6 avg) and recorded four receptions for 24 yards. 

AU fell behind early in the fourth quarter, 19-14, after Wright threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown with 11:15 remaining. 

With 4:16 on the clock, Wrighht rushed for eight yards before finding Jayden Horace for a 16-yard completion to give the Yellow Jackets a first down in JCSU territory. 

Two plays later, Wright connected with Montrell White on back-to-back plays for an 8-yard gain before completing a 20-yard pass on fourth-and-2 for a first down. On the next play, Wright found Harrington for the score capping an eight-play 55-yard game-winning drive. 

Wright completed 16-of-32 pass attempts for 193 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions to complement 43 rushing yards on 11 attempts (3.9 avg.). For a consecutive week, Horace led the game in receiving - finishing with 96 yards on three receptions. White hauled in four receptions for 50 yards to help AU record 306 total yards.

Julius Pearson, Kerry Thompson, and Jeremiah Bozeman spearheaded the defensive efforts for the Yellow Jackets. Pearson finished with five tackles, an interception and a blocked kick. Thompson had five tackles (3 solo), one sack and a forced fumble. Bozeman added four tackles, two tackles for a loss, one sack and a forced fumble. Artavon Edmond also added a sack for the defense.

JCSU (0-1) was led by Davion Nelson and Antonio Wallace. Nelson had a game-high 102 rushing yards on 19 attempts (5.4 avg.) and Wallace finshed 11-of-22 for 111 yards passing and two touchdowns. Reggie Bryant hauled in two receptions, both for touchdowns, to finish with 65 yards.

The Golden Bulls defense recorded five sacks with Louis Rogers holding a game high 1.5 sacks. Marvin Strong and Brandon Moses led all defenders with seven tackles apiece. Moses tacked on a sack and Strong posted five solo tackles. Twyann Jackson chipped in five tackles and helped JCSU take the lead in the fourth quarter courtesy of a 53-yard interception returned for touchdown to put the Golden Bulls out front 19-14.

Next up, Allen will host Livingstone on Sept. 18 at Westwood High School. The game is slated for a 6 p.m. start.
