The Lady Jackets' big win snaps a seven-game losing skid.
Columbia, S.C. – The Lady Yellow Jackets rode a hot start en route to a 79-49 win over the Albany State Lady Rams on Monday night.
The Lady Jackets came out firing on all cylinders, holding a 26-6 lead after the first quarter and another 40-22 lead to close out the first half. The Lady Jackets' momentum carried past the half as they outscored the Lady Rams 24-11 in the third quarter.
Kyla Reid (JR/Louisville, KY) led all players in scoring with 19 points, with Aniya Keeling (JR/Wichita, KS) adding 11 in her own right. Kelsey Felks (SO/Whitmire, SC) found nothing but net in this one as her perfect 5 for 5 in shooting earned her 10 points. Floor general Cyntheria Sullivan (JR/Graniteville, SC) sparked the Jackets' offense with a game-high 6 assists, and Jayda Jackson (SO/Atlanta, GA) contributed three steals and two blocks. Brooke Kyle (SO/Birmingham, AL) recorded 9 total points and tied Reid for a team-leading 8 points in the first half.
The box score reflects a true team effort by the Yellow Jackets in the victory, with 13 different players scoring points and 11 players seeing double-digit minutes of action. In total, the team had 21 assists, 12 steals and 6 blocks on the night. The Lady Jackets stayed out of foul trouble as only one player committed three fouls.
"This was a good win for us," Tatum stated. We've been working so hard and it finally felt good to let the ladies see what we're capable of when we work together and trust the process."
The Lady Jackets, now 3-8 on the season, will travel south for their next game on Wednesday, Feb. 24, against the Voorhees College Lady Tigers.
Their next home contest comes Friday, February 26, at 5:30 against SIAC opponent Fort Valley State.
Following that one, they will tip off with Savannah State University at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28, at home for the final game of Coach Tatum's inaugural season leading the Yellow Jackets.
