Mr. Chad A. Washington was named Director of Athletics on September 17, 2013. Tasked with revamping Allen University’s Athletics Program which consisted of three sports at the time, Mr. Washington’s first action was to identify a new athletic conference that coincided with the university’s right sizing strategic plan. Allen University was formerly a member of the now dismantled (E.I.A.C.) Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. After being a member of the (A.I.I.) Association of Independent institutions for 2 years, Mr. Washington saw a need to change in conferences in order to become an elite athletic program in the NAIA ranks. Allen University was granted membership into the (A.A.C.) Appalachian Athletic Conference in January 2016.
Since taking the reins as Athletic Director at Allen University, Mr. Washington has added an additional 7 varsity level university sponsored sports. These sports include: Men’s Track & Field Indoor/ outdoor, Women’s Track & Field Indoor/ outdoor, Men’s Cross Country and Women’s Cross Country and Wrestling. One of Mr. Washington’s biggest accomplishments to date at Allen University was being able to add wrestling as a varsity sport, being that they are the one and only HBCU that sponsors wrestling on the varsity level. Over the course of three years as Allen University’s Athletic Director, Mr. Washington has guided the university’s athletic program to attain two Basketball Conference Championships, and also produced several N.A.I.A. All-Americans student athletes.
Under the leadership of President Dr. Ernest McNealy, Mr. Washington visions continued growth in the university’s Athletic Program and student enrollment, by adding additional sports in the near future. Mr. Washington relishes in the opportunity that has been placed upon him to lead and serve as Athletic Director for the great Allen University.
The Columbia, SC. native Mr. Washington received his Bachelors degree from Benedict College in Business Management in 2009 and his Masters degree from Grambling State University in Athletic Administration in 2010. While in college Mr. Washington competed in Men’s Track & Field and Football. Active in numerous organizations, Washington is a proud member of NACDA.
